Questions and Answers

Q: can you tell me the difference between a red nose dog and one with a black nose,  does having a red nose mean anything and is it more rare and should it bring more money when buying a pup?

A: The basic difference is in the pigmentation of the nose. Both are accepted by IOEBA Breed Standard as long as pigmentation is complete. Spotted noses are considered a default by most Standards regardless of registry

The difference is simply in the pigment black being black, and red or liver nose being well just that. A total lack of pigment or missing some pigment is disqualifying for most show judges.

We personally don’t hold that either color is say better than the other, always look to the dogs health, shape and form 1st. As to rare, this depends on the genetic lines of the dog, if bred from a long line of red or liver noses you will likely get red or liver noses, in some other lines this is more rare. We have come up with both in the same litter.

We personally charge no extra for certain color of eyes, noses, coats etc. – We do like the look of a red or liver nose on the right dog.

You will find breeders with both opinions on this point, and there are breeders who have worked very hard to always come up with the liver or red nose.
